Impacts of alternative silvicultural systems on genetic diversity in Douglas-fir

Purpose

To study the genetic impacts of alternative silviculture systems. The intent is to sample foliage from overstory trees in each treatment of the Tappeiner/McComb Silviculture study. They would like to sample one treatment from each of the 3 stands. The

Chemical content of western red cedar

Purpose

This project is a study of the within-tree variation of thujaplien, the chemical that gives cedar its resistance to decay. Cross-sections will be removed at 2 meter intervals along the bole. A total of ten individuals will be destructively sampled.

Control of Flowering in Hybrid Poplars

Purpose

Hybrid poplar trees will be grown to serve as a source of tissue for tissue culture experiments. Many of these trees will be treated to force early flowering by a variety of means. Genetically engineered trees will be planted after permits are acquired.

Effects of compression wood on hydraulic conductivity in Douglas-fir branches

Purpose

Compression wood forms on the undersides of branches to support their weight against gravity. I have found in previous hydraulic work that this compression wood conducts very little water. In this study, I plan to measure hydraulic conductivity both wit

Flowering Control in Transgenetic Trees: Stability and RNAi Gene Suppression

Purpose

Impacts from escape of transgenes into wild populations has emerged as a major issue of debate over use of genetically modified crops. This concern is particularly important for forest plantations because trees are capable of extensive gene dispersal and
