Dynamic Testing of Pendulum Swing Balloon Logging System

Purpose

Project will involve rigging a two tree intermediate support arrangement to simulate a balloon and rigging a three guy line pendulum swing balloon system to this. Then tension will be monitored in the lines while weights are swung to simulate logging seq

Patch Dynamics Study

Purpose

The study will be looking at rates of vegetation closure through the years using aerial photographs. The sites will be used to gather some simple measures of opening size, current canopy size, and age of dominant perimeter trees.

Comparison of SPOT and Landsat Thematic Mapper Satellite Data in Characterizing Forest Types on the McDonald Forest

Purpose

Comparison of spectral characteristics of the French satellite, SPOT, with those of the Thematic Mapper data from the U.S. satellite, Landsat, over the south end of McDonald Forest. Some comparisons are strictly between the data from the satellites, but

Regional Study: Air pollution measurements

Purpose

Tie measurements of of nitrogen and sulfer-containing air pollutants to ecological effects on forested ecosytems. This is a stepping stone to the development of a regional 'critical load' that can be used in regulatory decision-making arenas with regard t
